The 2nd Belt & Road Leadership: Sustainable Development Summit

Since the 1^st Belt & Road Leadership: Sustainable Development Summit dated on 31 Aug, the organizer Social Enterprise Research Academy (SERA) received much positive feedback about the Summit. Many participants showed their interest related to the Belt & Road issues. Therefore, SERA followed the 1^st Summit closely and held the 2^nd Summit on 21 Nov by inviting government officials, scholars and business leaders to be guest speakers to discuss the sense of environmental protection, CSR and regional sustainable development under the background of Belt & Road.

Professor Raymond So Wai-man, BBS, JP, the under Secretary of the Transport and Housing, Mr. Joseph Chan Ho-lim, the under Secretary for the Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr. Shih Wing Ching, JP, the founder and chairman of the Centaline Group, Mr. Wong Wai Kwong, the former Business Development Manager of the MTR Corporation Limited, Professor Simon Shen Xu-hui, Hong Kong International Relations Scholar, Mr Kwok May Han Grace, Executive Director of Allied Environmental Consultants Limited., served as guest speakers. We are also honoured to have invited the representatives of the 10 supporting organization to attend the summit.

"Green finance will help promote the development of countries along the “One Belt, One Road”, reducing potential environmental risks.

Mr. Chan analyzed the influence and effect of Belt and Road to regional sustainable development, especially financial services. He thought Hong Kong’s financial service sector could have more room for development within the framework of Belt & Road. Dr Raymond So Wai-man JP, Under Secretary for the Transport and Housing, pointed out the connections of construction and transportation under Belt & Road.

"Public and private partnership is conducive to the cooperation between Hong Kong and the Mainland. It is an important foundation for enhancing sustainable development."

Taking the development of the MTR as an example, he pointed out that the public-private partnership can benefit both the public and private sectors and the public.

He analyzed the development situation of Kazakhstan and Myanmar, and concluded the chances and challenges of Belt & Road countries during his speech.

In the discussion, two cases were discussed, including “The balance between land reclamation and environmental protection in Hong Kong” and “unsuccessful land resumption in Indonesia” to bring out the importance of environmental protection for sustainable development.

"Hong Kong's experience in environmental protection and architectural design are worth to be learnt by countries along the Belt and Road. "

She mentioned the “Equator Principles” will help companies to reduce the impact of environmental and social risks in financing to achieve sustainable development.

"Attention to environmental protection during development is the priority for Hong Kong to promote sustainable development."

He mentioned the first issue of green bonds by the MTR. He mentioned that in the process of development, it will inevitably encounter problems affecting the environment, and Hong Kong is no exception.
